Why should you be hired as a Content Writer?

Why should we hire you for this content writing job or internship?

When I heard this question for the first time, it seemed awkward to stand there and praise myself.

I was asking myself, what should I say?

At first, we may think of an answer like I am very hardworking, sincere, smart, so on and so forth.

But is it enough to convince your recruiter? No, because this answer is very dry and objective.

Anybody can say that, so it’s time to go a few steps ahead and craft an answer that will impress your recruiter and get you the job. Here’s an example.

A sample answer for “Why should you be hired for Content Writing?”

I understand that this job requires me to have good research skills to write content for domestic and international clients. You should hire me because this is one of my strong points.

I have written content for a website that creates technical content for domestic and international audiences. It was initially challenging, but gradually I learned the writing style, and now it’s natural for me.

What sets me apart from other people is my ability to build better relationships and lead. I have been the secretary of the communication skills club at my college for three years. We organized several events and built our community from three members to over fifty active members at present.

If you follow all the steps mentioned in this article, I am sure you’ll build an answer even better than this one. So let’s get going.

The four elements of an effective answer

When a recruiter asks why they should hire you, it means they are asking you about these three things in particular.

  • Why are you the best candidate for the job?
  • What are your unique strengths, or what sets you apart from others?
  • Why do you want the job?

To answer these queries of a recruiter, you need these four essential elements in your answer.

  1. What is it that the recruiting company wants? Or What’s the problem that the company is facing?
  2. How can you help them achieve it? Or How can you help them solve it?
  3. Give them proof of how you’ve done this for someone in the past.
  4. What sets you apart from others?

Let’s look at each step one by one.

What’s it that the recruiting company wants?

Read the responsibilities and objectives of the company in the requirement section carefully.

Have a look at this example.

We are looking for content writers for writing content for digital platforms (website, blog, social media, video content).

Candidates who have experience in drafting marketing content for products will be preferred. If you have a flair for writing and are well versed in the tech world, then this role is for you!

Writing blogs, research articles, white papers, guest blogging.

Some articles would require a lot of research to be done.

Content will be for our International and domestic clients.

Example of a Job Responsibility section.

Now, this description looks almost similar in every company. Sometimes I think they copy each other’s description!

Let’s analyze this and underline the key requirements of the company.

  1. They need writers to write digital content.
  2. Candidates who can write marketing content are preferred.
  3. They should be well versed with the latest technologies.
  4. Researching skills is essential here.
  5. You’ll have to write content for international and domestic clients. (Most important)

The first step of the answering process is complete, and we have analyzed clearly what the company wants.

How can you help them achieve it?

Carrying on with the previous example, write down the skills that you possess.

It’s crucial to fulfill all the company’s requirements, as it increases your chances of selection.

But taking the worst case, let’s assume you have four out of the five required skills.

  1. You can write digital content
  2. Well versed with the latest technologies.
  3. Good researching skills.
  4. Have written content for both domestic and international clients.

So here’s the first line for your answer.

I understand that this job requires me to have good research skills to write content for domestic and international clients. You should hire me because this is one of my strong points.

It’s not compulsory to use the same language. You can change it according to your needs.

Proof of how you’ve done this in the past

This section is significant because this is what separates you from other people applying for the job.

You don’t just have to tell them that you possess the required skills. You have to prove it by showing them a case study.

I received this advice from a renowned content writer Charu Mitra Dubey. She says if you have a case study to prove your point, you can save hours of convincing work.

Indeed, my clients never ask me about my degree; they always ask me about my experience. So, think of an instance where you used these skills to help clients achieve their goals.

It’s not necessarily the experience of working in a job. It can be volunteer work, your college experience, etc.

Narrate your answer in the form of a story. Look at the example shown here.

For example, I have done this by writing content for a website that creates technical content for international audiences. It was initially challenging, but gradually, I learned the style of writing, and now it’s natural for me.

Factually your answer is complete here. But if you want to add some pepper to your answer, then continue with the next section.

What sets you apart from others?

Every person is unique in their way. Some people learn fast, whereas others lead a team better. Ask yourself what’s that one unique skill or quality, which makes you stand out.

Here, we are talking about your behavioral qualities and not technical qualities. You’ve proved your technical ability in the previous sections. It’s time to show them your qualities as a person.

I know it isn’t easy to analyze and find out a unique skill in ourselves. So here are two ways to do it.

  1. Introspect and find the reason why people appreciate you. Write down the qualities for which people love you as a person. These are the qualities that make you unique.
  2. Call or text the people who are closest to you, and ask them what’s that one thing that they appreciate a lot about you and why.

You’ll be shocked to see the responses, and eventually, you’ll end up building a better relationship as well. Here’s an example.

What sets me apart from others is my ability to build better relationships and lead. I have been the secretary of the communication skills club at my college for three years. We organized several events and built our community from three members to over fifty active members at present.

Your answer can be a lot better than mine because everyone is unique.

Things to Remember

Don’t learn the answer that we’ve created here. Thousand of other candidates will read this blog post, and I am sure many of them will copy the answer given here, so please don’t copy.

Your answer shouldn’t be longer than one minute. This question is generally asked at the end of the interview to assess your confidence. Therefore, keep it short and crisp.

Now there is an exception to this rule; If the interviewer is asking this question initially, you have to keep it comprehensive.

As I said earlier, this question is to assess your technical and behavioral compatibility for the job. So try to cover both aspects of the answer.

Be honest because people tend to lie during their interview, and the interviewer knows how to catch it. If you don’t know, something says, “Sorry, sir! I don’t know”. It’s as simple as that. Your interviewer will appreciate your honesty a lot.

Last but not least, go with the flow. Don’t remember the answer word to word, remember the plot; the answer will come on its own.

Conclusion

I would like to conclude by saying, read the company objectives carefully, find out the skills you’re good at, be ready with an example where you used these skills to solve a problem for someone, and don’t forget to add the qualities that make you a great human as the cherry on the top.

Finally, craft a personalized, short, and crisp answer, add your technical and behavioral skills equally well, be honest, and go with the flow. Wish you very good luck with your interview.
